Can anybody fit flue pipe and liner?

Connecting flue to an appliance can be carried out by any competent person provided that the appliance is not connected to a fuel supply (GAS / OIL).

We would recommend that the final connection should be made by a professional installer.

Final connection and commissioning of a flue on an appliance that is already connected to a gas supply must be carried out by a CORGI registered installer.

Final connection and commissioning of a flue on an appliance that is already connected to an oil supply must be carried out by a OFTEC registered installer.

Final connection and commissioning of a flue on an appliance that does not burn gas or oil e.g. Wood burning stove, can be carried out by a competent person.

Do I need to test the Installation?

Yes, this is done by means of a flow test as described in BS5440. This can be summarised as follows:- After a visual and physical check of the joints in the system, and ensuring an adequate air supply for combustion as been provided, close all doors and windows in the room in which the appliance is to be installed. It will be necessary to introduce heat to the flue system for a minimum of ten minutes, and possibly up to 30 minutes, Using a blow torch or similar. Position a smoke pellet, (providing a performance of 5m3 of smoke in 30 seconds burn time) at the intended position of the appliance. The test is satisfactory if there is no significant spillage from the appliance position, no seepage over the length of the system, and discharge only from the terminal. If these conditions are not met, the test has failed and all faults must be rectified and the system retested before connection of the appliance to the fuel supply. In the event of further problems reference should be made to BS5440 and BS6461.

Can I fit a chimney system in my conservatory (with a polycarbonate roof)?

Yes.

Chimney systems get very hot even on the external skin, therefore use a twin wall insulated chimney system such as our system MF2 when penetrating the roof, and allow an at least a 75mm clearance between the outer skin of the chimney and the polycarbonate roof.

We would recommend you use a Masterflash flashing as the large square base allows for covering the larger than normal hole in the roof. You will need the high temperature products and use the fixing kit for installation.

My fire or boiler smells of gas, what should I do?

Turn off the appliance and contact British Gas or a CORGI registered installer immediately. Do not despair, the solution may be quite simple, by servicing your appliance or by extending the flue or by fitting a better Terminal or Cowl.

My fire/boiler blows back when its windy, what can I do?

This is usually due to downdraught in the flue. This is caused by the, location or, type of the flue terminal. On the windward side of the ridge, a pressure zone can force air down the flue. This problem can, often be cured by raising the flue, out of this zone. On the lee side turbulence is caused by the ridge and the can often be cured by fitting one of the following cowls :- H Cowl , Aspirator, Vidette.
