How Windkat Works

Windkat uses a system of injection nozzles to maintain constant negative pressure in any flue to which it is fitted and is the most effective anti-downdraught cowl on the market.

windkat diagram

The purpose of a flue is to draw exhaust gases, from combustion in fireplaces or stoves, up the chimney and safely out into the atmosphere. There are however certain factors including local topography (hills or trees), building design (low chimneys) and most commonly weather conditions (strong winds or thermal inversions) that can act like a ‘cap’ on the critical zone where the chimney meets the atmosphere. This creates overpressure and stops exhaust gases from rising and therefore exiting the building.

These factors can lead to the unfortunate scenario of a fire that is difficult to light and/or burns irregularly. But BEWARE, as a poorly functioning flue can also lead to highly toxic exhaust gases backing-up, coming back down the flue (downdraught) and entering your room which can be extremely dangerous and even life threatening.

As well as having your chimney checked regularly by a qualified sweep, the Windkat is the best solution on the market today for avoiding these downdraught problems. But there’s even more! Not only does the Windkat stop downdraught, but its unique ability to maintain a steady even draw in virtually all weather conditions leads to greatly increased efficiency in combustion. This means that wood and other fuels are burned at their optimum rate meaning more complete combustion which in turn leads to pollution reduction and financial savings.

F.A.Q   Top Of Page
Why is Windkat better than other anti-downdraught chimney cowls?

Apart from stopping downdraught, Windkat will provide a constant even draw in your chimney unlike competitor products that either have little effect at all (many other static cowls) or can make your chimney draw too much or too little depending on the wind (spinning cowls). Constant draw makes for an efficient fire that’s a pleasure to use. Windkat is also a pot and cowl all in one so if you’re having a new fireplace or stove installed its worth fitting a Windkat straight away as you will need a pot/cowl anyway and the features of the Windkat will improve your fire’s efficiency and guard against any future weather related problems.

Does the Windkat prevent downdraught?

Yes, Windkat uses a system of injection nozzles to maintain constant negative pressure in any flue to which it is fitted and is the most effective anti-downdraught cowl on the market.

Does the Windkat have any effect on wind noise?

We cannot guarantee that the Windkat will reduce all wind noise, but as Windkat gives all fires and stoves a more constant even draw excessive wind noise is likely to be reduced.
How do I find out what size I need?

By measuring the internal diameter of your chimney flue at the top and following the guidelines on Advice Centre.

Windkat Baseplate   Top Of Page
Quick Overview
The Windkat Baseplate anti downdraught chimney cowl is suitable for flue sizes from 13cm to 30cm.
It is designed to be fitted onto the flat top of concrete or brick chimney stacks. Screws and plugs are provided as well as a tube of heat resistant silicone which is used to make a seal between the base plate and the chimney stack.

The base plate configuration allows the Windkat anti downdraught chimney cowl to be easily fitted onto the flat top of brick or concrete chimney stacks.

The square base plate is fastened to the chimney stack with four screws and the cowl simply slots on top. No concrete is needed!.

The Windkat replaces any existing chimney pot and cowl. Stacks must be sound before the cowl is attached and while many people install thier own cowls we recommend you have your local sweep do the work as they can check your chimney and flue at the same time.

It is designed to be fitted onto the flat top of concrete or brick chimney stacks. Screws and plugs are provided as well as a tube of heat resistant silicone which is used to make a seal between the base plate and the chimney stack.

Windkat Plug-in Base   Top Of Page
Quick Overview
The Windkat Plug-in Base anti downdraught chimney cowl is suitable for flue pipe sizes from 78mm to 296mm.
Choose the Windkat with a plug-in connector size from 1mm to 6mm smaller than the internal diameter of your flue pipe (the plug-in connector must fit inside your flue pipe). The heat resistant silicone provided should be used to fully seal the connection.

The plug-in configuration allows the Windkat anti downdraught chimney cowl to be attached directly into flue pipes (usually projecting metal pipes). The plug-in attachment comes in various sizes and the correct size to choose should be 1mm to 6mm smaller than the interior diameter of the flue pipe into which the cowl is to be fitted. The cowl and plug-in attachment simply slot into the flue. Installation takes seconds and some heat resistent silicone (provided) makes sure of an airtight fit

NB: please make sure you measure the diameter of your flue carefully and your flue remains at a constant diameter for at least 30cm down to allow the plug-in adapter to plug-in fully.
